Cold Weather Notice

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a great Holiday Season with family and friends!
After a very warm December, Winter is finally here.

As a result, Old Mill Community Council, Inc is writing to remind you how you can help prevent water and heating pipes from bursting in cold weather.

Over the winter, low temperatures can cause water to freeze and expand, which leads to burst pipes.
This can cause leaks, not only ruining your property, but your belongings too.You can help avoid the risk of pipes bursting by taking the following simple precautions:

  • Always maintain at least a low level of heat throughout the day and night, especially if the property is to be left empty for several days.
  • Please ensure all outside water pipes are properly drained and all external hoses are disconnected.
  • Make sure you are aware of the location of stop taps so you can shut off the water supply in case of an emergency.
  • Make sure the furnace thermostat is working, so the heating will come on automatically in the night when the temperature approaches freezing.
  • Check waste pipes and the overflow pipe from the furnace have not iced up.
  • Report any minor leaks or dripping taps.

In the event of a burst pipe:

  • Turn off the stop tap and turn on all sink taps to drain as much water as possible.
  • Locate the leak(s) and catch leaking water in containers.

As a Reminder:

  • Christmas trees will be picked up during the first two weeks of January, 2016 by AAA Trash.
  • Trash is NEVER to be put out earlier than 8pm on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. Offenders who do so are encouraging the presence of rats and other vermin.
