Trash and Recycling

Trash pickup for the community is on Monday and Thursday mornings. Recycling is picked up on Mondays. Yard waste** pickup is on Wednesdays. One exception is the week of the Thanksgiving Holiday, when the trash pickup is moved to Friday.

Trash/recycling/yard waste may be put out at the designated pick up locations after 5:00 pm the day before scheduled pickup. Empty trash/recycling containers should be promptly removed from the designated pick up locations.

You can view the community’s whole trash policy here: Trash Policy

Regular trash/recycling disposal is a service provided by the Old Mill Community Association, and contracted to Republic Services. However, if you need help disposing of large items or large amounts of debris, please contact Republic Services directly at 703-818-8222, as they may not pick up items not covered by our current contract (there may be additional fees to the resident).

Additional Trash/Recycling Resources From Fairfax County:

  • Fairfax County collects glass for recycling in purple bins at several locations around the county. The closest location to Old Mill is the Springfield District Governmental Center parking lot (6140 Rolling Road).

  • Fairfax County accepts household hazardous materials from residents free of charge and disposes or recycles them according to all local, state and federal regulations (info line 703-324-5068). The closest location to us is the I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax).

** Please note that yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, straw, brush, small branches, vines, and flowers. Tree and brush limbs or wood must be cut to 4 feet or less in length and tied in bundles. Other yard waste must be placed in paper bags or reusable containers. On February 23, 2021, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to prohibit the use of plastic bags for yard waste.
